Mechanism of follicular unit transplantation
In FUT, a surgeon cuts skin from the scalp (usually the back of the head). The exact size of the strip depends on the number of hair follicles required to cover the bald spot. Strips are typically less than 1 to 1.5 centimeters (0.4 to 0.6 inches) wide. Once the individual hair follicles have been removed from the strip, reinsert it into your scalp.

Who Needs FUT Procedures?
Both FUT and FUE grafts require sufficient hair to be used for the graft.
Men with androgenetic alopecia (commonly called male pattern baldness) are the best candidates for FUT. In men, the condition commonly occurs with the Norwood pattern, or an M-shaped hairline with hair loss at the temples. Women with this condition usually suffer from the Ludwig pattern. This causes hair loss along the top of the hairpiece and thinning on the crown of her head.
If medical conditions such as thyroid disease or alopecia areata are the cause of your hair loss, FUT surgery is probably not an option.
